The case for warm light

Why we design lamps to be seen at eye level, and why one ceiling light is rarely enough.

Overhead light flattens a room. Light at eye level and below does the opposite: it gives walls depth, faces warmth and furniture shadow.

We build lamps from alabaster, paper and bronze because those materials soften the bulb. Place two or three at different heights, keep them under 2700 kelvin, and switch the ceiling light off.
